Consulta en cads..WASHINGTON — Claudio Ranieri delivered his thoughts on hot-button issues after the U.S. national team lost to Trinidad and Tobago 4-1 in the first World Cup match for 19 years.
But before that loss, he let the group into his view on the political climate in the U.S. and the changing face of soccer here.
“I think it’s the perfect time to talk about politics,” Ranieri said. “The president has been elected again. The election is over. Everybody is so happy. It’s a time to be very happy in this country and to enjoy. This is why I’m so sad to lose the game against Trinidad. Because I feel very happy here and my heart is still in this country.”
Ranieri admitted he has talked with players on the U.S. team about the political climate in the U.S. He knows the election is over and expressed his opinion that it’s wrong to interrupt sporting events to discuss politics.
“The politics that are the rule in America, the decisions of the government, the elections, the time to vote, the time to talk about a soccer match — it’s the perfect time to talk about this,” Ranieri said. “Football is the most important thing in the United States. Not only soccer, but for some people it’s the only thing. I’m happy because I’m proud to be from a country where people follow soccer.”
Ranieri also discussed how the state of American soccer affects the national team.
“I’m very sad when I see that American soccer is still like this,” Ranieri said. “Not only in the World Cup, we cannot compete with the level of the best teams in the world.”
The Italian football legend said he watched the World Cup on his television in his Rome apartment.
“Now they have to change the situation,” Ranieri said. “I hope that they fix it and the American teams have a very good season. 0b46394aab
